The Concordia Society was formed on May 1, 1886 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama by a group of men who were either from Germany or of direct German descent. The name of the society was to be the Concordia Society with the “object and purposes to be to cultivate sociability, enjoyment and singing, as well as German customs among its members.”
A constitution was adopted, officers were elected, and shares of capital stock were sold. On May 13, 1886 property was bought that had been held by several of the founding members. The society paid $1500 (the amount of the capital stock) for two lots facing what is now 5th Avenue South between 10th and 11th Streets. A building was built and opened with a grand ball on December 6, 1888. The building was 45x75 feet.
